Chulalongkorn University during the Period of Nation Building

In 1936 Colonel Luang Pibulsongkhram, the Minister of Defence, became Rector of Chulalongkorn University. Later in 1938, he became Prime Minister of Thailand and remained the University’s Rector. That a member of the government held an important administrative position at Chulalongkorn University demonstrated that the leaders of the People’s Party lent much importance to higher education. The government, under the premiership of Colonel Luang Pibulsongkhram, and later Field Marshal P. Pibulsongkhram, announced the Nation Building Policy as the main policy in the country’s development under the Following the Leader Policy and Nationalism directive that emphasized the creation of Thai identity. Education was one way that would enable the policy to be effective in practice so the management of education at Chulalongkorn University was expanded to cover a greater diversity of fields of knowledge in response to political, economic and social needs, for instance, Dentistry, Veterinary Science and Commerce and Accountancy. Pictures of the buildings erected during the administration of Field Marshal P. Pibulsongkram in the architectural style that was popular during that time—simple and sturdy in form and lines, without traditional decorative designs.
