The First Graduation Ceremony

The First Graduation Ceremony

The first graduation ceremony in Siam, held at Chulalongkorn University, was inaugurated King Prajadhipok, who conferred a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine to graduates for the first time on October 25th, 1930.

The King delivered a speech on this occasion and part of it reads:

“… I am delighted to confer degrees on these university graduates for the first time today. It should be considered to be an important day in Siamese history because one way of measuring the progress of any country is through its educational progress. …”

This act of generosity by the King to Chulalongkorn University started a tradition in Thai institutions of higher education that the King or his representative will preside over the graduation ceremonies of public universities. This tradition continues today.
