Chulalongkorn Students and the General Election of 1957

On February 26th, 1957, the General Election in Thailand was fiercely contested between two major political parties. The Election proceeded amidst political turmoil and the newspapers reported extensive corruption in the campaign. This led to a major movement opposing the government.

On March 2nd, 1957, a number of Chulalongkorn Students, who were leaders of this movement to oppose the Election, flew the national flag at half mast to mourn the death of the country’s democracy before marching to the Ministry of the Interior and the Government House. A large number of people who were dissatisfied with the election result joined the demonstration and so did students from other educational institutions.
